👉 What is a Water Level Indicator?
A Water Level Indicator is a device fitted on the boiler shell which indicates the level of water inside the boiler drum.
👉Types of Water Level Indicators:
(1) Gauge Glass Type
> This is the most common type used in industrial boilers.
> Consists of a glass tube.
> One side connected to steam space.
> Other side connected to water space.
> The water level seen in the glass represents the actual boiler water level.
(2) Reflex & Transparent Type
• Used in high-pressure boilers
• More strong
• Better visibility
• Safer than normal glass type
✅Importance of Water Level Indicator:
🔹 Prevents Overheating
If water level goes too low, boiler tubes get overheated and may be burst.
🔹 Prevents Carryover
High water level causes water to mix with steam, damaging turbines and pipelines.
🔹 Mandatory Safety Device
As per Boiler Rules, at least two independent water level indicators are compulsory on boiler shell
👉Common Problems in Water Level Indicator
✔️Glass choked due to scale
✔️Wrong reading due to improper blowdown
✔️Leakage from gland packing
✔️Glass breakage due to thermal shock
✔️Maintenance of Water Level Indicator
* Daily Checks:
✔ Blow through water & steam side
✔ Check clear visibility
✔ Ensure no leakage
*Periodic Maintenance:
✔ Replace worn-out glass
✔ Clean scale deposits
✔ Check valves operation
Safety Tip :
From my 30+ years of practical experience, maximum boiler accidents happen due to wrong water level indication or operator negligence.
✅Never assume water level on digitaly, always confirm it physically also.
Conclusion:
All boiler components work together to produce steam safely and efficiently. The Water Level Indicator plays a vital role in preventing boiler accidents. Proper operation and regular maintenance of each boiler part is essential for long boiler life and safe working.
