Boiler Safety Valve setting procedure
🔧 Boiler Safety Valve Setting Procedure
👉 Introduction
A boiler safety valve one of the most critical important safety devices in steam Boiler.
As per my experience, It protects the Boiler from overpressure and possible explosion.
Safety valves are designed and tested according to international standards like ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, which gives rules for design, Inspection and testing of Boilers pressure equipment.
Here given boiler Safety valves.
• Spring loaded safety valve
• Dead weight
• High lift safety valve
• Lever safety valve ( old system)
Spring loaded safety valves open automatically when pressure reaches the Set pressure and close when pressure drops below the blowdown.

👉 Safety Valve Setting Procedure
* Step 1 – Preparation
Before starting the setting procedure, proper preparation is essential
✔️Check boiler is in shutdown condition,
✔️Isolate steam line if required,
✔️Check pressure gauge is calibrated,
✔️Check safety valve conditions.
👉Practical note: Never start setting work on a running boiler without proper isolation and safety precautions.
* Step 2 – Check Nameplate Details
Carefully verify the valve specifications:
(1) Set pressure rating,
(2) Manufacturer data,
(3) Valve size and conditions.
👉These values must match the boiler design pressure.
* Step 3 – Mounting Inspection
Ensure correct Installation :
• Check valve properly mounted, on Boiler.
• Nut-bolts are properly tightened ,
• No visible leakage from seat.
👉Improper mounting can lead to wrong pressure readings.
* Step 4 – Gradually Pressure Raising in Boiler
In this step, boiler pressure is increased slowly to check the correct operation of the safety valve.
✔️ Method:
• Start the boiler at low firing rate.
• Allow steam to generate gradually.
• Increase the pressure slowly and steadily.
• Continuously monitor the pressure gauge.
👉 Important Points:
√ Sudden increase in pressure must be avoided
√ Rapid pressure rise may cause incorrect valve operation
√ Slow pressure increase ensures accurate safety valve setting
👉Exam Line:
Pressure should be raised gradually under controlled firing while continuously observing the pressure.
* Step 5 – Pop Test (Opening Test)
• Valve should open exactly at setting pressure,
• Record actual opening pressure,
• Check and Compare with required set pressure.
👉If valve does not open at correct pressure, adjustment is requirements.
* Step 6 – Adjustment
• To adjustment spring compression screw, if needed,
• Clockwise - Increase set pressure,
• Anti-clockwise - Decrease set pressure.
👉 Adjustment should be done gradually and carefully.
* Step 7 – Blowdown Checking
After opening :
• Valve should close properly.
• Closing pressure should be slightly below set pressure.
👉This difference is called blowdown (generally few %)..
* Step 8 – Final Locking after set pressure
After correct setting :
• Lock adjustment nut,
• Apply seal wire.
👉This prevents unauthorized adjustment.
* Step 9 – Documentation
• Record all test reading ,
• Mention Inspector name,
• Note date and set pressure value.
👉Proper documentation is mandatory for audit and safety compliance.
⚠️ Important Practical Points:
👉Always test safety valve with certified inspector.
• Never block or bypass safety valve,
• Always follow boiler rules.
• Ensure discharge line is free and open.
• Always use calibrated instrument.
“Safety Precautions (Detailed)”
While go to settings for safety valve please follow safety rules:
• Wear all PPE (gloves, helmet, safety glasses)
• Hot surface risk
• Steam burn dangerous
👍 Practical Experience Note:
👇 From practical field Experience, most Safety valve problems happen due to:
- Poor maintenance
- Dirt or scale on valve seat
- Wrong pressure setting
- Untrained handling
👉 In many cases, valves fail not because of design, but due to improper maintenance practices.

✅ CONCLUSION:
Safety valve setting is a very critical boiler safety activity.
👉 Proper setting ensures :
✔ Boiler protection
✔ Safe operation
✔ Long equipment life
✔ Prevention of accidents
👍 Regular testing and Correct adjustment help maintain Boiler operation safety.
