INTRODUCTION

In my 30 years of experience I have observed that Yearly boiler passing  (inspection) is a mandatory requirement in most industries to ensure safe and efficient boiler operation.

Boilers operate under high pressure and temperature and continuous operation leads to scale formation, sludge deposition, and internal corrosion.

Therefore, proper preparation before boiler inspection is critical.

This guide explains complete preparation steps before boiler Annual passing, including chemical circulation, inspection checklist, risks, and solutions.

Why Boiler Annual Inspection and Passing Preparation is Important

 • Ensures compliance with safety regulations:

Proper preparation ensures that the boiler meets all legal and safety requirements. It helps avoid penalties, legal issues, and rejection during inspection.

 • Prevents accidents and failures:

Inspection preparation helps identify unsafe conditions like low water level risks, pressure issues, or faulty safety devices. This reduces chances of accidents and boiler failure.

 • Improves boiler efficiency:

Cleaning Chemicals circulation, and proper checks improve heat transfer and fuel efficiency. A well-prepared boiler performs better during operation.

 • Identifies internal defects early:

Checking internal parts like tubes, drum, and water walls. It allows early detection of issues such as scale formation, corrosion, cracks, or leakage. Early identification prevents major damage and reduces repair cost.

 Reduces downtime during inspection:

When the Boiler properly cleaned and prepared in advance, the inspection process becomes smooth and faster.

This reduces unnecessary delays, minimizes shutdown time, and helps resume operation quickly. This avoids unnecessary  production loss.

Early Detection of Defects:

Preparation allows internal inspection of tubes, drum, and other parts. Problems like scale, corrosion, and leakage can be detected early.

Avoids Inspection Failure:

A properly prepared boiler is more likely to pass inspection in one attempt, saving time and repair costs.

Ensures Safe Restart:

After passing, the boiler can be safely restarted without risk to equipment or workers.

👉If preparation is not done properly, the boiler may fail inspection, leading to shutdown, penalties.

✅ Chemical Circulation Before Boiler Passing

When is Chemical Cleaning Required?

👇Chemical circulation is required when:

• Scale formation is observed

• High TDS operation for long time

• Reduced heat transfer efficiency

• Sludge accumulation inside tubes

  Types of Cleaning:

1. Alkaline Cleaning

➡If scale is light and water quality was controlled:

• Use alkaline chemicals (caustic soda, dispersants)

• Helps remove oil, grease, and sludge

2. Acid Cleaning

➡Used only when heavy scale is present:

• Sulfamic acid or inhibited acid

• Requires expert supervision

Basic Chemical Circulation Procedure

✔️Fill boiler with water

✔️Add required chemical dose

✔️Start circulation pump (blowdown → tank → top return)

✔️Maintain temperature (60–80°C while requirements )

✔️Circulate for 6–12 hours (depending on condition)

✔️Drain and flush thoroughly

✔️Neutralize water (pH ~7–8)

✔️Final flushing with fresh water

 ✅ pH Control

 •  Alkaline cleaning: pH 10–12

 •  Neutralization: pH 7–8

As per my experience, alkaline cleaning using sodium hydroxide is suitable for removing sludge, oil, and light deposits, but it is not effective for hard scale removal.

In cases where hard scale is present, acid-based cleaning such as sulfamic acid or approved descaling chemicals should be used under controlled conditions.

⚠️ Important Safety Point :

✔️ Chemical cleaning should always be condition-based.
It must be carried out only when required, based on inspection findings, scale formation, or performance issues.

✔️Acid cleaning should not be done unnecessarily.
As excessive or improper use can damage boiler components and reduce equipment life.

✔️ Using the wrong chemical or incorrect concentration can lead to serious.
Metal damage, corrosion, and safety risks. Therefore, proper chemical selection, controlled circulation, and expert supervision are essential during the Cleaning process.

👇 Boiler Passing Preparation Checklist

 1. Shutdown Procedure

✔️ Stop firing

✔️ Cool down boiler slowly

✔️ Depressurise completely

 2. Internal Cleaning

✔️ Open man hole, mud hole, hand hole

✔️ Remove sludge and deposits

✔️ Inspect tubes, furnace, drum, headers

✔️ Check and clean Fusible Plug in furnace chamber, if needed replace it   ( fire tube, packaged, multitubller boiler only )

 3. External Inspection Preparation

✔️ Clean outer surface

✔️ Check insulation condition

✔️ Ensure accessibility

 4. Safety Valve Check

✔️ Manually test while boiler in operation

✔️ Remove and test safety valve

✔️ Set correct pressure

✔️ Ensure no leakage

 5. Pressure Gauge

✔️ Calibration required

✔️ Replace faulty gauge

6. Water Level System

✔️ Both Gauge glass assembly open and overhaul

✔️ Clean gauge glass

✔️ Check level controller

7. Feed Water System

✔️ Check pump operation

✔️ Ensure proper flow

8. Blowdown System

✔️ Clean blowdown line

✔️ Ensure valve operation

✔️ Ensure no leakage

9. Burner & Combustion System

✔️ Clean burner nozzle, diffuser plate

✔️ Check flame condition

✔️ Verify fuel pressure, fuel pumps

10. Electrical & Control System

✔️ Check wiring

✔️ Test alarms and interlocks

✔️ Check water drum level controller  and transmitter

✔️ Check Water and steam flow transmitters

⚠️ What Happens if Preparation is Not Done?

 ● Boiler may fail inspection

 ●  Risk of Tube leakages

 ● Reduce Efficiency

 ● High fuel consumption

 ● Safety hazards (explosion risk)

  Unexpected shutdown and break downs

   Solutions & Best Practices

✔️ Maintain proper water treatment year-round, using chemical treatment likes Oxygen scavenger, pH Booster and phosphate.

✔️ Perform regular blowdown

✔️ Monitor TDS, TH and pH

✔️ Schedule preventive maintenance

✔️ Do chemical cleaning only when required

✔️ Keep inspection records updated

 Conclusion:

Proper boiler passing preparation is essential for safety, efficiency and compliance. Chemical circulation should be done based on actual condition, not blindly. Inspection preparation ensures safe operation and compliance with safety regulations. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to avoid failures.

A systematic checklist and proper maintenance ensure smooth inspection and long boiler life.
